Designing software 3,000 restaurants actually use

What I learned designing point-of-sale software for operators who had never used a computer for work — and why technical literacy is the real design constraint.

This is a starter post — replace it with the real thing. A quick structure that works: open with a specific, surprising moment from the project. Then the problem, what you tried, what broke, and the one insight a reader will remember.

Start with a scene, not a summary

Recruiters and designers skim. A concrete opening — a line a restaurant manager said, a screen you had to throw away — earns the next paragraph. Save the abstract lessons for after you've shown one.

Drop an image that grounds the story

End with something quotable

The best interface is the one a first-day employee can operate during a dinner rush.

A single sharp line is what gets screenshotted and shared. Write the essay, then find the one sentence worth pulling out.
